FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Jordan
Asia
Flag origins
Jordan's flag has black, white and green horizontal stripes, a red triangle at the hoist and a white seven-pointed star. Article 4 of the Constitution specifies its design. It derives from the flag of the Great Arab Revolt of 1916. The royal explanation associates black with the Abbasids, white with the Umayyads, green with the Fatimids and red with the Hashemites: these are historical dynastic colors, not simply colors of nature.
Flag story
The seven-pointed star symbolizes Arab unity and Jordanian identity. The revolt was led by Hussein bin Ali against Ottoman rule during the First World War. His son Abdullah established the government of Transjordan in 1921; full independence followed in 1946. The flag connects the modern kingdom with that Hashemite history.
