FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Liechtenstein
Europe
Flag origins
Liechtenstein's flag has blue above red and a golden princely crown at the upper hoist. The law specifies the national colors and the placement of the Furstenhut, or princely cap. The crown makes the country's identity as a principality immediately visible. The princely family's own colors are different: gold and red.
Flag story
The best-known story concerns the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Liechtenstein then used a plain blue-and-red horizontal flag, effectively identical to Haiti's civil flag. The coincidence became apparent internationally, and Liechtenstein added the golden crown in 1937 to distinguish its flag. The crown is therefore both a royal symbol and a practical identifying feature.
