FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Lithuania
Europe
Flag origins
Lithuania's flag has yellow, green and red horizontal bands. Yellow represents sunlight and prosperity, green nature, forests, freedom and hope, and red courage and blood shed for the country. During the design discussions of 1917–18, green and red drawn from traditional dress were thought too dark, so yellow was added. The tricolor became associated with independence in 1918.
Flag story
The flag was banned during Soviet occupation beginning in 1940. German occupation during the Second World War and renewed Soviet rule brought other flags. The tricolor was restored legally in 1988, before Lithuania declared the restoration of independence on 11 March 1990, after nearly fifty years of suppression.
