Flag origins

Montenegro's flag has a red field, gold border and the national arms. The crowned double-headed eagle holds an orb and scepter; its breast shield contains a walking golden lion. The design revives historical dynastic heraldry and was adopted in July 2004, before Montenegro became independent from its union with Serbia in 2006.

Flag story

Montenegro adopted the flag while it was still a republic within Serbia and Montenegro. Independence followed two years later, and the 2007 Constitution retained the design. It replaced the red, blue and white tricolor associated with the Yugoslav period, making historical state symbols central again.
