FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Nauru
Oceania
Flag origins
Nauru's flag has a dark-blue field, narrow yellow horizontal line and a white twelve-pointed star below the line near the hoist. The government explains blue as the Pacific, yellow as the equator, and the star as Nauru and its twelve traditional tribes. First raised at independence on 31 January 1968, it places the star south of the line because Nauru lies about forty-two kilometers south of the equator.
Flag story
The flag works like a simplified map: an island just below the equator in the Pacific. Its geographical placement is deliberate, while the twelve rays supply a separate cultural reference to the traditional tribes. Not every star on a flag represents a political state or province.
