FLAG GUIDE

Flag of North Korea

Asia

Flag origins

North Korea's flag has a broad red center, narrow white stripes and blue outer bands, with a red star in a white disc near the hoist. Adopted in 1948, it differs from the Taegeukgi previously used on both sides of the peninsula. Official symbolism connects red with revolution and patriotism, white with the purity and unity of the Korean people, blue with peace and international friendship, and the star with socialist revolution.

Flag story

After liberation, the Taegeukgi was initially used in both northern and southern Korea. The new northern design appeared in July 1948, before the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was established on 9 September. The star reflects the symbolism of socialist movements and Soviet influence.
