Flag of Qatar

Asia

Flag origins

Qatar's flag is white at the hoist and deep maroon, called Al Adaam, elsewhere, separated by nine serrations. Current law specifies Pantone 1955 C for the maroon. Local red-purple textiles have a long history, with Bin Ghannam Island linked to dye production. A 1932 flag had the nine-point boundary as well as diamonds and the country's name; the extra devices were removed in 1960.

Flag story

Bahrain has red with five serrations, whereas Qatar has maroon with nine. Proportions also help: Qatar's 11:28 flag is much longer than Bahrain's 3:5 flag. Official accounts describe a British proposal for nine points in 1932 and Qatar's insistence on its traditional maroon instead of red.
