FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Congo

Africa

Flag origins

The Republic of the Congo’s flag arranges green, yellow and red diagonally. These are Pan-African colors. Green represents forests, agriculture and hope; yellow unity, friendship and hospitality; and red the independence struggle and the people’s courage. The government specifically explains green as hope, yellow as unity and traditional hospitality, and red as courage. Adopted in 1959 and retained at independence, the design was replaced by a red flag during the socialist period and restored in 1991.

Flag story

The Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are separate countries despite their similar names. The former is often called Congo-Brazzaville after its capital; the latter Congo-Kinshasa. Their colonial histories also differ: the Republic was a French colony and the Democratic Republic a Belgian colony. Remarkably, their capitals face one another across the Congo River.
