FLAG GUIDE
Flag of São Tomé and Príncipe
Africa
Flag origins
Sao Tome and Principe's flag has green, yellow and green bands, a red hoist triangle and two black stars in the yellow center. The stars represent the two principal islands that give the country its name. Government educational explanations connect the triangle with equality, red with the independence struggle, and the green-yellow-red palette with that movement. The design dates to independence from Portugal in 1975.
Flag story
The islands became major cocoa and coffee producers under Portuguese colonial rule, with large plantations called rocas. Around two hundred operated by the early twentieth century. In 2026, six rocas were inscribed together as The Rocas of Sao Tome and Principe: Colonial Agricultural System and Forced Migration, the country's first World Heritage property. Their prosperity was deeply tied to coercive labor and forced migration, including workers brought from Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde. The heritage designation recognizes this difficult history as well as the surviving plantation landscape.
