FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Saudi Arabia
Asia
Flag origins
Saudi Arabia's flag is green with the white Arabic shahada above a white horizontal sword. The inscription states that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Official explanations associate green with growth and prosperity, white with peace and purity, and the sword with justice and security. A predecessor of the current design was approved on 11 March 1937, with detailed rules established in the 1973 Flag Law.
Flag story
Because it bears sacred words, the flag is not flown at half-mast. Rules also prohibit uses that compromise its dignity, including covering a body or inappropriate commercial use. The inscription and sword must be clearly legible on both sides: a simple single-sided print that reverses the words on the back does not satisfy the formal design.
