FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Sudan
Africa
Flag origins
Sudan's flag has red, white and black horizontal bands with a green hoist triangle. Adopted on 20 May 1970, it uses Pan-Arab colors. Government explanations connect red with independence struggle and sacrifice, white with peace and purity, black with Sudan's history and name, and green with agriculture, prosperity and growth. Black also relates to the historical Arabic expression from which Sudan's name derives.
Flag story
At independence on 1 January 1956, Sudan used a blue, yellow and green tricolor representing the Nile, desert and forests or farmland. The 1969 coup was followed by adoption of the Pan-Arab design in 1970. Both the colors and the flag's central concept changed from natural geography to a wider political and cultural identity.
