FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Suriname

South America

Flag origins

Suriname's flag has green, white, red, white and green horizontal bands, with a large yellow star in the broad red center. First raised at independence on 25 November 1975, it officially associates green with the land's potential and hope, white with justice and freedom, red with progress and love of country, and the star with national unity and a bright future.

Flag story

The pre-independence flag had five differently colored stars representing ethnic groups on a white field. Independence replaced them with a single yellow star, emphasizing one people with varied backgrounds. First president Johan Ferrier also recalled discussions of the star's orientation: two points downward were chosen to suggest standing firmly on two feet.
