FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Tajikistan

Asia

Flag origins

Tajikistan's flag has red, white and green horizontal bands in a 2:3:2 relationship, a golden crown and seven stars in the white center, and overall proportions of 1:2. Adopted on 24 November 1992, it officially connects red with national unity and friendship, white with cotton and mountain snow and ice, and green with fertile valleys. The crown and seven stars also appear in the national arms.

Flag story

Seven has a prominent place in the flag's historical symbolism. The design was selected after a post-independence competition attracting more than two hundred proposals. Dushanbe also erected a 165-meter flagpole in 2011, recognized at that time as the world's tallest; that historical record should not be mistaken for a permanent current ranking.
