FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Tunisia

Africa

Flag origins

Tunisia's flag is red with a white central disc containing a red crescent and star. A predecessor was introduced around 1831 under Husayn II, during Ottoman influence, and the basic design survived independence from France in 1956. Its red, crescent and star share Ottoman associations, while the white disc creates a distinctive Tunisian arrangement.

Flag story

Turkey places a white crescent and star directly on red; Tunisia places red symbols inside a white circle. That circle is the easiest identifying feature. The design also survived the abolition of the monarchy in 1957, showing that a republic can retain a flag inherited from its royal period.
