FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Turkmenistan
Asia
Flag origins
Turkmenistan's flag has a green field, white crescent and five white stars, plus a red hoist band with five traditional carpet guls and olive branches. The carpet motifs refer to major traditional Turkmen groups—Ahal Teke, Yomut, Saryk, Chowdur and Ersari—and express friendship and unity. Government explanations connect green with life and renewal and the crescent and stars with unity. Olive branches were added in 1997 following the UN's recognition of permanent neutrality in 1995.
Flag story
The carpet motifs preserve cultural identities rather than serving as generic ornament. Traditional Turkmen carpet-making itself entered UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2019. The later addition of olive branches shows how the flag also incorporated a new national policy without discarding its traditional imagery.
