FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Uganda
Africa
Flag origins
Uganda's flag has six bands repeating black, yellow and red, with a grey crowned crane in a central white disc. Adopted at independence on 9 October 1962, it officially associates black with African people, yellow with African sunshine and red with the shared blood and fraternity of Africans. The crane is the national bird and also appears in the arms.
Flag story
The crane's raised foot symbolizes the country moving forward, according to government explanations. It was already used in military badges during the colonial period and continued as a national emblem after independence. At the independence ceremony, Major Akorimo Kanuti raised the new flag as the Union Jack came down.
