FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Yemen

Asia

Flag origins

Yemen's flag has plain red, white and black horizontal bands. Adopted on 22 May 1990 when North and South Yemen united, its Pan-Arab colors are officially associated with sacrifice and unity, a bright future, and a dark past respectively. The absence of a star or arms is connected with the unification process.

Flag story

North Yemen had a green star on the shared tricolor, while South Yemen added a light-blue triangle and red star. At unification, both sets of distinguishing devices were removed, leaving the common red, white and black. The simple result did not just impose one predecessor's entire flag on the other.
