Flag origins
Syria's flag has green, white and black horizontal bands with three red stars in the white band. Following the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, it replaced the red-white-black flag with two green stars. Article 6 of the constitutional declaration signed on 13 March 2025 specifies this design. Its origins lie in the independence era: a 1928 constitutional draft, formal adoption in 1930 and use in Aleppo in 1932. Current official explanations associate green with the Rashidun period, white with the Umayyads, black with the Abbasids, and the stars with Damascus, Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor.
Flag story
The Assad-era two-star flag originated with the 1958 union of Syria and Egypt as the United Arab Republic. After the 2024 change, the independence-era three-star flag returned and was codified in March 2025. It was raised at UN headquarters in April 2025. What looks like a new flag is therefore a revival of a design used about ninety years earlier.
