FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Zambia
Africa
Flag origins
Zambia's flag has a green field, red, black and orange vertical bands at lower fly, and an orange eagle above them. Adopted at independence on 24 October 1964 and refined in 1996, it officially associates green with vegetation and natural resources, red with the freedom struggle, black with the people, and orange with minerals, particularly copper. The eagle expresses rising above national difficulties.
Flag story
The design is unusually concentrated at the fly, far from the flagpole. Eagle imagery also appeared in the arms of colonial Northern Rhodesia, connected with the African fish eagle around Victoria Falls. Independence retained the bird but presented it soaring upward without the earlier fish.
