FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Djibouti

Africa

Flag origins

Djibouti’s flag has light blue above green, with a white triangle at the hoist containing a red five-pointed star. The Constitution specifies blue, green and white with a red star. Common interpretations associate blue with sea and sky, green with land, white with peace and the star with national unity. It was formally raised at independence from France on June 27, 1977.

Flag story

The colors also have associations with Djibouti’s main peoples. A precursor used during the independence movement linked blue with the Somali Issa and green with the Afar. Combined with white for peace and a red star for unity, the design expressed different groups forming one nation. Before independence, the territory’s final French name was the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas, itself naming those two principal communities.
