FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Jamaica
North America
Flag origins
A gold diagonal cross divides Jamaica's flag into green triangles above and below and black triangles on either side. It was first raised at independence on 6 August 1962. In the modern official explanation, black represents the strength and creativity of the people, gold natural wealth and the beauty of sunlight, and green hope and agricultural resources: the sun shines, the land is green, and the people are strong and creative. A 1961 design competition produced no winner; a bipartisan parliamentary committee finalized the flag in 1962.
Flag story
Jamaica is the only current sovereign-state flag without red, white or blue, a distinction it acquired when Mauritania added red stripes in 2017. At midnight on 5–6 August 1962, the Union Jack was lowered and Jamaica's new flag was raised to mark independence.
