FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Tanzania
Africa
Flag origins
Tanzania's flag has green at upper hoist and blue at lower fly, separated by an ascending black diagonal band edged in yellow. Officially, green represents land and natural resources, blue water, black the people, and yellow mineral wealth. Adopted in 1964 for the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, it combines Tanganyika's green, black and yellow with blue associated with Zanzibar.
Flag story
The name Tanzania also combines Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which united on 26 April 1964. The union received its present name that October. Zanzibar retains its own president, legislature and government for non-union affairs. The name, flag and political institutions all preserve the history of that union.
