Flag of Kuwait

Asia

Flag origins

Kuwait's flag has green, white and red horizontal bands and a black trapezoid at the hoist. It was adopted in 1961, the year British protection ended, and first officially raised across government offices on 24 November. The Pan-Arab colors are associated with a verse by Safi al-Din al-Hilli: white deeds, black battles, green fields and red swords.

Flag story

Before independence, Kuwait used red flags bearing Arabic writing; a 1939 version included the country's name. Independence on 19 June 1961 led to the present geometric four-color design. The black hoist shape is a trapezoid, a useful distinction from the triangles on several other Arab flags.
