Flag of Liberia

Africa

Flag origins

Liberia's flag has eleven red and white stripes and a white star in a blue canton. Its resemblance to the United States flag reflects the settlement of freed and formerly enslaved Black Americans through the American Colonization Society. Liberia became independent on 26 July 1847, and the flag was first raised on 24 August. The stripes represent the eleven signatories of the declaration; red and white signify courage and moral excellence, blue Africa, and the star the independent republic.

Flag story

A committee of seven women chaired by Susannah Elizabeth Lewis designed the flag. Replacing the earlier colonial design with a single star made independence visible while retaining the American connection. The capital, Monrovia, was named after US President James Monroe—an unusual example of a capital outside the United States bearing a US president's name.
