FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Libya
Africa
Flag origins
Libya's flag has red, black and green horizontal bands, with a double-width black center bearing a white crescent and star. Originally adopted for the United Kingdom of Libya under King Idris I at independence on 24 December 1951, it evokes historical regions, the independence movement and Islam. Abandoned after the 1969 coup, it was restored in 2011.
Flag story
From 1977 to 2011, Libya used a completely green flag without any emblem, connected with Muammar Gaddafi's political ideology and the Green Book. Earlier post-1969 flags were different again. The flag restored in 2011 was therefore not a wholly new design: it revived the independence-era flag after forty-two years.
