FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Malawi
Africa
Flag origins
Malawi's flag has black, red and green horizontal bands with a red rising sun on the black band. Based on the independence flag of 6 July 1964, black represents African people, red the struggle and sacrifice for freedom, and green natural wealth. The sun expresses a dawn of African freedom and hope; its thirty-one rays are traditionally linked with Malawi's place among African countries achieving independence.
Flag story
For just two years, the rising sun became a complete sun. In 2010 the bands changed to red, black and green and a full white sun was placed centrally, intended to express progress since independence. Parliament restored the original rising-sun design in 2012. The sequence is therefore 1964 rising sun, 2010 full sun, 2012 rising sun again.
