Flag of Myanmar

Asia

Flag origins

Myanmar's flag has yellow, green and red horizontal bands and a large white five-pointed star spanning all three. Specified in the 2008 Constitution and introduced in 2010, it officially associates yellow with unity, harmony, wisdom and happiness; green with fertility, fairness and a peaceful land; red with courage and determination; and the star with purity, integrity, compassion and strength. The colors recall the independence movement.

Flag story

The 1948 independence flag was red with white stars in a blue canton. A 1974 socialist-era revision added a cogwheel and rice ears. The 2010 flag therefore looked radically different, but the government also presented its yellow, green and red as a revival of independence-era colors rather than an entirely new palette.
