Flag of Niger

FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Niger

Africa

Flag origins

Niger's flag has orange, white and green horizontal bands with an orange disc in the middle. Adopted on 23 November 1959, it officially associates orange with the northern desert, green with the fertile southern plains along the Niger River, and the disc with the sun. The constitutional description specifies three equal bands and a central orange circle.

Flag story

The flag came before full independence on 3 August 1960: Niger became a republic in December 1958 and adopted this design roughly eight months before independence. The more elaborate national arms include a sun, two Tuareg swords and a spear, millet and a cattle head, representing courage, agriculture and pastoral life. Those arms are not drawn on the flag.
