FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Oman

Asia

Flag origins

Oman's flag has white, red and green horizontal bands, a red vertical hoist band and white national arms in the upper hoist. Officially, white expresses peace, red the earlier flag and resistance to invaders, and green fertility. Adopted in 1970 and subsequently updated, it bears two crossed swords and a khanjar, the traditional curved dagger, with sheath and belt. The arms originated in the Al Busaid dynasty in the eighteenth century.

Flag story

The khanjar is not just an obsolete weapon. Men still wear it with traditional dress for ceremonies and special occasions, and it appears on banknotes as well as the flag. The craft skills and social practices associated with the khanjar were inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2022.
