FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Panama

North America

Flag origins

Panama's flag is quartered: white with a blue star at upper hoist, red at upper fly, blue at lower hoist, and white with a red star at lower fly. Officially, blue and red represent the Conservative and Liberal parties, white peaceful coexistence, the blue star purity and honesty, and the red star authority and law. Manuel Encarnacion Amador designed it on the night of 1 November 1903.

Flag story

The designer's father, future first president Manuel Amador Guerrero, approved the proposal and asked Maria Ossa de Amador to make it. She and relatives secretly sewed two flags on 2 November. Panama declared separation from Colombia the next day and publicly raised the new design: designed two days before independence, sewn the day before, then unveiled at independence.
