Flag of Paraguay

FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Paraguay

South America

Flag origins

Paraguay's flag has red, white and blue horizontal bands and a central seal. A related tricolor was used from 1812, and an extraordinary congress established the flag with its seals on 25 November 1842. Official explanations associate red with patriotism and courage, white with purity, unity and peace, and blue with love, knowledge, liberty and truth.

Flag story

Its two sides have different central images, not simply mirror images. The front shows the national arms with a gold star, palm and olive branches, and Republica del Paraguay. The reverse bears the treasury seal: a lion beside a spear topped with a Phrygian cap, and Paz y Justicia, meaning Peace and Justice. This unusual two-seal arrangement dates to 1842.
