Flag of Saint Lucia

FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Saint Lucia

North America

Flag origins

Saint Lucia's flag has a cerulean-blue field with overlapping gold and white-edged black triangles. Artist Dunstan St. Omer designed it for the attainment of associated statehood on 1 March 1967. The government associates blue with loyalty, tropical skies and the surrounding seas, gold with sunshine and prosperity, and black and white with African and European cultural influences living together. The triangles evoke Gros Piton and Petit Piton near Soufriere, as well as hope and aspiration.

Flag story

The basic design predates independence on 22 February 1979: it was already in use in 1967. Its colors and proportions were subsequently refined, including an adjustment on 22 February 2002. The central triangles are not an abstract invention: visitors really can see the twin mountains that inspired them.
