FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Togo

Africa

Flag origins

Togo's flag has five alternating green and yellow horizontal stripes, a red canton and one white star. Designed by artist Paul Ahyi and adopted at independence on 27 April 1960, it officially associates green with forest, agriculture and hope; yellow with faith, mineral wealth and maturity toward a common future; and red with independence sacrifice. The stripes are traditionally linked with five regions at independence.

Flag story

Paul Ahyi studied art in France and returned after graduating from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1959. The following year he designed the independence flag and also contributed to Lome's independence monument. UNESCO appointed him an Artist for Peace in 2009. This is a national flag with a clearly identified major artist behind it.
