FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Madagascar
Africa
Flag origins
Madagascar's flag consists of three equal rectangles: a white vertical panel at the hoist and red above green at the fly. Adopted in 1958, before independence from France on 26 June 1960, it combines colors associated with the precolonial Merina kingdom and later national aspirations. Official explanations link red with unity and royal history, green with hope and nature, and white with freedom, security and purity.
Flag story
Madagascar's cultural history connects Africa with Southeast Asia. Its population includes African and Malay-related origins, and Malagasy belongs to the Austronesian language family. Although geographically African, the island's history crosses the Indian Ocean. Its area of roughly 587,000 square kilometers is about 1.6 times Japan's.
