FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Somalia

Africa

Flag origins

Somalia's flag has a light-blue field with one white five-pointed star. Designed by Mohamed Awale Liban and adopted on 12 October 1954 under UN trusteeship, it continued after independence and union on 1 July 1960. The star symbolizes Somali-inhabited areas historically divided among Italian, British and French Somaliland and neighboring parts of Ethiopia and northeastern Kenya.

Flag story

UN records describe approval by the Territorial Council in September 1954 and the first raising at the trusteeship administration in Mogadishu on 12 October beside UN and Italian flags. It thus existed about six years before the Somali Republic formed from the former British and Italian territories. Somalia still commemorates 12 October as Flag Day.
